Film Review -- Blue Jasmine

Woody Allen's 2013 entry features Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Andrew Dice Clay, Bobby Cannavale, Peter Sarsgaard, Louis C.K., and others. Jasmine French (Blanchett) is a former New York socialite who is left penniless after her businessman husband Hal (Baldwin) is imprisoned for fraud. She moves to San Francisco to live with her sister Ginger (Hawkins), and soon realizes how different they really are. Ginger never ascended the lower-middle class conditions they were raised in, and leads a simple life with her kids and mechanic boyfriend Chili (Cannavale). Accustomed to a much more fancy and sophisticated life, Jasmine has a difficult time getting accustomed to her new situation and falls further into a depressive state. This film is, without a doubt, one of the best Allen films that I've see. Although primarily a drama, it also has comical moments, striking an ideal balance. The acting is absolutely fantastic, highlighted by Blanchett's exceptional performance, but also featuring some great supporting performances. Allen's writing and directing is reliably precise. It is difficult to find a fault in this film. It is an absolute pleasure to watch.
