Directed by John Madden, this political espionage thriller stars, among others, Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson, and Jesper Christensen. The film begins in 1997, where the daughter of retired Mossad agents (Mirren and Wilkinson) has written a book about their and their partner's (Ciaran Hinds) successful capture and killing of Dieter Vogel -- the Surgeon of Birkenau -- a Nazi war criminal (Christensen). Flashbacks to the 1966 mission show how the young agents Rachel, David, and Stephan (Chastain, Worthington, and Martin Csokas) carry it out -- and a surprising twist is revealed. The Debt is a very tense film, and wonderfully constructed. Certain plot points are more believable than others, and I didn't quite buy into them, detracting from my overall experience. It is, however, a nicely acted, pleasantly entertaining film.
