Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Sacha Baron Cohen, is my favorite film of 2011, so far. A beautiful homage to cinema (and one of the earliest directors, George Melies), Scorsese crafts a sentimental and truly touching film. The story is centered around an orphaned boy, living in a train station in Paris, who seeks to uncover a secret left to him by his father in an automaton. Butterfield is captivating, and performances by the supporting cast are superb. It is rated PG, although not quite a kiddie film; audiences young and old will appreciate this manifestation of love from Scorsese to his passion, cinema. I'm hoping that awards season will be very kind to this rare gem of a film.
