I thought I'd write my first review on the last film that I saw -- just earlier this night, actually. The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep, is an intimate, semi-biographical look at the life and career of Britain's first female prime minister. The film is set in the present-day, with an aging Thatcher remembering, in flashbacks, when she was a young college grad and aspiring politician, then her election and eleven years in office. The most memorable component of the film is Streep's incredible performance. My personal favorite actress, Streep once again excels in the role that she plays, convincingly portraying the British leader, with an impressive accent to match. Other highlights include the splendid costume design (courtesy of Consolata Boyle) and the archive footage of major events in Thatcher's leadership, the most abundant being the riots in England in the 1980s. Although not a particularly incredible or memorable piece of filmmaking, The Iron Lady is worth seeing for the amazing Streep's performance alone.
