Film Review -- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

This Cold War thriller was directed by Thomas Alfredson and stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Mark Strong, and Tom Hardy. Disgraced, retired British spy George Smiley (Oldman) is secretly hired again by his government when it suspects that the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI-6) is being compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets. It is a very interesting story, full of detail and intricately plotted. The pace, however, is a tad slow -- there is a lot of dialogue exchange (admittedly, I excepted a little more action, from the previews I saw). Its 128 minute running time can feel a lot longer at times. It is not terribly visually interesting either; set in gloomy London, there is very little color, from the buildings to the weather to clothing. However, it is anchored by a splendid performance from Oldman, and the mystery will keep you entertained and guessing throughout the film. Who is the double agent? Watch Spy to find out.
