This dark comedy is from the writer and director of Juno (Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman, respectively) and stars Charlize Theron. Mavis Gary is a depressed, lonely, young-adult fiction writer who returns to her hometown of Mercury, Minnesota with hopes of rekindling a romance with her ex-boyfriend (Patrick Wilson). The problem: he is now happily married with a newborn daughter. This film is very reminiscent of Juno, and is unmistakably Cody's: both are centered around average, common people (in Minnesota -- coincidentally?) who are dealing with problems that plague their relatively simple, small-town lives. The film is a very interesting look at a very specific subject matter, and Theron is excellent in her role. Although by no means a brilliant film, Young Adult is amusing and entertaining.
