This critical darling was written and directed by Alexander Payne and stars George Clooney and Shailene Woodley. When his wife lands in a coma after a boating accident, Hawaiian Matt King attempts to reconnect with his two daughters (Woodley, Amara Miller), while deciding the fate of 25,000 acres of undisturbed land in Kauai'i, a family heirloom. Perhaps my expectations were too high going into this film, since plenty of critics had been singing its praises for weeks up to its release. But the film was not as moving as I thought it would be. Perhaps the humor purposely mixed around in the very sad central plotline was meant to keep the viewers detached from the emotional aspect of the story. However, it is a very decent film; there is a rawness to it that is almost brutal. Convincing performances (although, I found, not as amazing as the critics said they are) and incredible shots of the beauty that is Hawai'i should keep you thoroughly entertained. Look for The Descendants to receive plenty of love when the nominations for the 2012 Academy Awards are announced on Tuesday, January 24th. The greatest chances are for Actor (Clooney), Supporting Actress (Woodley), Directing (Payne), and Adapted Screenplay (Payne).
