Film Review -- Moneyball

Directed by Bennett Miller, this 2011 film stars Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. Based on a true story about the 2002 Oakland Athletics, general manager Billy Beane (Pitt) drastically changes the business of baseball. Burdened with the smallest payroll in Major League Baseball, Beane employs analyst Peter Brand (Hill), as his assistant GM, and they use computer-generated analysis to draft their players at the best possible value. Acquiring players that would normally be disregarded because of quirks or position, they are able to build a 20-consecutive-win team (an MLB record) that, against all odds, makes it into the postseason. A fine performance by Pitt anchors the film, and Hill's is quite amusing as well. I am a passionate fan of baseball, so I particularly enjoyed this film. It is also a great true story about defying the odds and forever changing how a sport is played.
